family values in the faith-based and reality-based communities
    This is interesting:
Walking the walk on family values

President Bush and Vice President Cheney make reference to "Massachusetts liberals" as if they were referring to people with some kind of disease. I decided it was time to do some research on these people, and here is what I found.

The state with the lowest divorce rate in the nation is Massachusetts. At latest count it had a divorce rate of 2.4 per 1,000 population, while the rate for Texas was 4.1.

But don't take the US government's word for it. Take a look at the findings from the George Barna Research Group. George Barna, a born-again Christian whose company is in Ventura, Calif., found that Massachusetts does indeed have the lowest divorce rate among all 50 states. More disturbing was the finding that born-again Christians have among the highest divorce rates.

    ...

The liberals from Massachusetts have long prided themselves on their emphasis on education, and it has paid off: People who stay in school longer get married at a later age, when they are more mature, are more likely to secure a better job, and job income increases with each level of formal education. As a result, Massachusetts also leads in per capita and family income while births by teenagers, as a percent of total births, was 7.4 for Massachusetts and 16.1 for Texas.

    ...

For all the Bible Belt talk about family values, it is the people from Kerry's home state, along with their neighbors in the Northeast corridor, who live these values. Indeed, it is the "blue" states, led led by Massachusetts and Connecticut, that have been willing to invest more money over time to foster the reality of what it means to leave no children behind. And they have been among the nation's leaders in promoting a living wage as their goal in public employment. The money they have invested in their future is known more popularly as taxes; these so-called liberal people see that money is their investment to help insure a compassionate, humane society. Family values are much more likely to be found in the states mistakenly called out-of-the-mainstream liberal. By their behavior you can know them as the true conservatives. They are showing how to conserve family life through the way they live their family values.

I am also reminded of the lowered abortion rate during Clinton's presidency versus the increased abortion rate in Bush's. And the fundamentalist "family values" people who abuse or kick their gay kids out of the home. The "family values" crowd deludes themselves in many ways.

    vote! voĉdonu!
I'm really disgusted and worried about the extensive Republican campaign to suppress voters in non-Bush areas. Look at stuff like this (just stuff I've seen today):

It's interesting but not surprising that (according to a new poll by New York Times) most whites seem unaware of the voter suppression going on, but blacks are quite aware of it:
    65. Do you think there is a deliberate attempt in some states to prevent African-Americans and other minorities from voting or having their votes counted, or not?

And it's really interesting that almost half the country considers Bush to have stolen the election in 2000. The media almost never talks about this unprecedented phenomenon - almost half the country has lost faith in the integrity of our presidential elections and feels that Bush stole the presidency! Almost half the country was always unhappy about the outcome of previous elections - Democrats didn't like Bush the First winning, Republicans didn't like Clinton winning, but they always accepted it as legitimate. But in 2000, Republicans just smugly told the "Sore Losermen" to "get over it" (and then they wonder why we're pissed off and think it ridiculous when Bush calls himself a "uniter not a divider".) More discussion at Orcinus.
    66. Regardless of what you think about George Bush now, looking back to 2000, would you say George W. Bush legitimately won the 2000 presidential election, or not?

Now's the time to take it back from the thieves. Vote! I honestly think that in a fair election, Kerry will defeat Bush, if everyone really gets out there and votes. Vote early in the day to avoid the inevitable crowds and snafus (and I really hope no serious voter suppression occurs.) (But you can get there as late as 7pm theoretically and still be allowed to vote. But still - do it early!) Remember your voter registration card or other ID like drivers license or passport. If you experience problems or hassles, call the voter protection hotline (866) OUR-VOTE. Finally, I ran across a couple interesting inspirational blog entries on voting today here and here.

Today is rather stressful for obvious reasons... wondering if we'll have four more years of lies, preemptive wars, denouncing peaceniks as America-hating traitors, etc. The election is swinging to and fro... So it was nice to have a distraction and meet out-of-town Esperantist Peggy for lunch with [info]6opou and [info]kircxo. We ate Mexican food at Las Manitas and had a good fun conversation.
