Bad Santa
Bad Santa is a funny nasty bleak weird film. It's partly a caper film (Santa and elf rip off department store) but mostly a black comedy about hitting bottom. At the showing I saw, some clueless woman brought two little kids who seemed to be about 5 years old and were very shrieky until an usher finally told them to quiet down. I have no idea what the parent was thinking taking such young kids to see Bad Santa. Did she think it was some heartwarming kids' holiday movie? I guess some people have no idea what kind of movie they're going to, and it doesn't occur to them to check in advance if the R-rated film might be inappropriate for little kids. The movie opens with an alcoholic bedraggled self-loathing Billy Bob Thornton getting drunk in a sleazy bar, cursing continually, and then puking in the alley. I can't imagine the kids understood or enjoyed much of what happened in the film, but we adults did.
