Mi malvarmumis dum pluraj tagoj, kiu ĝenis min. Hodiaŭ ŝajnas pli bone. A2na trovis metodon kuiri veganajn patkukojn kun mirteloj - sukceso! - tiam venkis min en "Age of Steam". Ni pli-malpli finis tradukon de priskriba teksto por la panoramo pri Racławice, kaj Arono konsentis provi voĉlegi kaj registri ĝin, por ke vizitantoj al polaj Esperantaj kongresoj (UK en Bjalistoko kaj ekumena kongreso en Vroclavo) havos ŝancon viziti tiun muzeon kaj aŭdi la programon en Esperanto, sed la afero ja estas urĝe lastminuta pro nia prokrasto. Mi ankaŭ faris organizan laboron hejme, kiun mi volis, do ĝenerale estas bona dimanĉo!

I had a cold for several days which was annoying. Today seems better. A2na found a way to cook vegan pancakes with blueberries - success! - then beat me in Age of Steam. We more or less finished the translation of the descriptive text for the Panorama about Racławice, and Arono agreed to try recording his voice reading it, so visitors to Polish Esperanto congresses (UK in Białystok and an ecumenical congress in Wrocław) will have a chance to visit that museum and hear the program in Esperanto, but it's very hasty and last-minute due to our procrastination. I also did some organization at home which I'd been wanting to do, so generally it was a good Sunday!

Hamleto - tiel staras nun la demando

Mi ĵus spektis matinean prezenton de Hamleto fare de ĉina trupo (http://www.sta.sh.cn) en la ĉina, kiel parton de la ankoraŭa teatra festivalo en Vroclavo. Mi komprenis la dialogon eĉ malpli ol mi komprenas polajn teatraĵojn, sed la rakonto estas sufiĉe bona konata, kaj la aktoroj talente esprimis la emociojn kaj agojn. La spektaklo estis iom eksperimenta, kaj plejparte estis efika, kvankam mi ne bone kaptis la evidente simbolan signifon de multaj franĝbalailoj, kiuj aperis plurfoje kaj en la finalo. Poste mi pensis, ke tio estis eble la unua teatra versio de Hamleto, kiun mi spektis (mi vidis filmojn). Sed mi vidis multegajn Śekspirajn teatraĵojn en mia vivo, do mi ne scias. Ćiuokaze, mi sentas iom da inspiro legi pli el la klasika Esperanta traduko de Zamenhof - ĝis nun mi legis nur parteton, kaj la lingva fluo kaj ritmo ja plaĉis al mi.

I just watched a matinee presentation of Hamlet performed by a Chinese group (http://www.sta.sh.cn) in Chinese, as part of the ongoing theater festival en Wrocław. I understood the dialog even less than I understand Polish plays, but the story is sufficiently well known and the actors expressed the emotions and actions with talent. The production was rather experimental, and for the most part worked, although I didn't really get the apparent symbolic significance of many mops which appeared several times and in the final scene. Later I thought, that this was maybe the first theatrical version of Hamlet which I've seen (I've seen films). But I've seen a huge number of Shakespeare productions in my life, so I'm not sure. In any case, I feel a bit inspired to read more of Zamenhof's classic Esperanto translation - so far I've only read a little bit of it, and the language flow and rhythm was pleasing.

Ni iris al koncerta festivalo hieraŭ vespere en parko sur insulo apud ni. Ni alvenis dum ludis pola grupo Psio Crew (sonas kiel /pŝo krev/). Ili ŝajnas interese miksi regean, hiphopan, ĵazan, kaj tradician polan popolan muzikojn (eĉ kun 4 violonistoj, kun 2 en tradiciaj montaranaj vestaĵoj) kun nekutima plaĉa muzika rezulto. Krome la bandonomo estas vortluda, ĉar "Crew" devenas de hiphopa tradicio sed la pola vorto "krew" /krev/ estas sango, kaj "psia krew" estas popola esprimo "hunda sango" (kiel "damne!"), sed en la silezia dialekto oni prononcas "psia" kiel "psio". La tuta afero estis amuze metaeca...

We went to a concert festival yesterday evening in a park on an island near us. We arrived while a Polish band Psio Crew (pronounced /Psho Krev/) was playing. They seem to interestingly mix reggae, hiphop, jazz, and traditional Polish folk music (even with 4 fiddlers, with 2 in traditional mountain garb) with an unusual fun musical result. Plus the band name is wordplay, since "Crew" references hiphop tradition, but the Polish word "krew" /krev/ is blood, and "psia krew" is a folk expression "dog blood" (like "damn!"), but in the Silesian dialect they say "psia" like "psio". The whole thing was amusingly meta...

Oni petis min verki artikoleton (temis pri Esperantaj terminoj rilate al vegetarismo kaj veganismo), kaj hieraŭ mi pasigis plurajn horojn "en la fluo", skribante senkonscia pri la paso de tempo. Mi ŝatas kiom tio okazas. Poste ni iris al la instituto por tabulluda klubo, kie ni ludis 2 fojojn Metropolys kun Krzysztof kaj nova Michał (al kiu mi instruis St. Petersburg antaŭ kelkaj semajnoj). Poste alvenis Magda, kolegino de a2na, kaj mi instruis en la pola al ŝi kaj Krzszytof kaj alta Piotr la ludon Trias - tiuj reguloj estas ial iom longe por klarigi, sed mi sukcesis fari ĝin pole, do mi feliĉis pri tio. La dumluda konversacio estis tutpola. Poste mi instruis simplan elegantan ludon kiun mi elpensis lastatempe, kun koloraj lignaj kuboj, kaj tiam ni finis per iom da Zendo. Ni ankaŭ aĉetis Dixit, kiu estas nova ludo kiu dependas de parolado kaj priskibado de diversaj bildoj sur kartoj, ĉar ni volas ludi ĝin kun Esperantistoj, ne nur por helpi komencantojn sed ankaŭ pro scivolo kiel ĝi funkcias kun internacia grupo kiu parolas komunan lingvon sed ne havas komunan nacian kulturon. Ĝis nun mi ne ludis ĝin ĉar mi tro ofte ne komprenas la polan (kaj iom fuŝus la celon de la ludo se oni klarigus la diratajn priskribojn), kaj mi ne kaptas multajn kulturajn aludojn de poloj, kiuj okazas dum ludado de Dixit verŝajne (ekz aludoj al televido, komiksoj, ktp).

I was asked to write a short article (about Esperanto terms related to vegetarianism and veganism), and yesterday I spent several hours "in the flow", writing unconscious of the passage of time. I like when that happens. Later we went to the institute for game club, where we played Metropolys 2 times, and later I taught several games in Polish, including Trias which is oddly long/complex to explain, and we played all in Polish, so I was happy about my Polish "skill". Finished up with a simple elegant game I designed with wooden cubes and a bit of Zendo. We also bought Dixit, which is a new game that depends on speech and describing various pictures on cards, because we want to play it with Esperantists, not only to help beginners learn, but also from curiosity about how it works in an international group who share a common language but don't have a common national culture. So far I've not played it because I too often don't understand Polish (and it would somewhat defeat the purpose of the game if one were to explain the spoken descriptions), and I don't get many cultural references which Poles apparently often make while playing Dixit (e.g. references to childhood TV shows, comics, etc).

vira ludnokto pola

Amiko Krzysztof en apuda urbo invitis min ree al sia domo por la tradicia nur-vira ludnokto dum sia edzino estis aliloke. 2 el la samaj homoj de antaŭa fojo (Ryszard, Mariusz) reaperis plus alia nova al mi viro. Estis tre agrabla; ni ludis Metropolys, Snow Tails, Small World, Wysokie Napięcie, Stone Age ĝis la 3a matene. Aparte agrable por mi estis tio, ke nur unu el ili komforte parolas angle, do preskaŭ la tuta vespero estis en la pola, sed mi ofte sufiĉe bone kunkonversaciis. Kelkaj el ili iagrade konscience parolas pole iom pli facile por ke mi povu kompreni kaj partopreni, kaj mi tre aprezas tion. Tio esperigas min, ke mia lama pola pliboniĝas.

A friend Krzysztof in a nearby city invited me again to his home for the traditional "men only" gaming night while his wife was somewhere else. 2 of the same guys from the previous time (Ryszard, Mariusz) were there again plus another one new to me. It was quite enjoyable; we played Metropolys, Snow Tails, Small World, Power Grid, Stone Age till 3 am. It was especially pleasing that only one of them is comfortable speaking English, so almost the whole evening was in Polish, but I was often able to more or less keep up with the conversation. Several of them to varying degrees consciously speak Polish a little more easily so I can understand and participate, and I appreciate that. It gives me hope that my lame Polish is improving.

Grałem znowu u Krzysztofa z Ryszardem, Mariuszem i Tomkiem w 5 gier (Metropolys, Snow Tails, Small World, Wysokie Napięcie, Stone Age) do 3 rano. Bardzo miło było bo cały czas było po polsku ale często oni rozmawiali po polsku trochę łatwiej dla mnie, więc często mogłem rozumieć dość dobrze i rozmawiać. To bardzo miło i to daje mi nadzieję, że mój słaby polski jest coraz lepszy.

La pasinta semajno estis ĥaosa kvankam ĝenerale plaĉa. Multaj aferoj okazis, sed plej gravaj estis ke koincide vizitis nin 2 gastoj samtempe:

Unu estis couchsurfing-ulo, afabla malstreĉa ulo kiun interesis teatra festivalo nun en Vroclavo. Li vojaĝis multe en sia vivo, inkluzive al Barato kiel ni, do ni ĝuis konversaciojn pri landoj, kulturoj, vivmanieroj, ktp. Li kaj mi iris malfrunokte al trinkejo kie kuniĝis multaj el la festivalaj partoprenantoj, kaj ludis loka muzika duopo kun tre plaĉa muziko, kiun mi priskribus kiel ia miksaĵo de lokaj popolaj stiloj kun mezorientaj influoj. Mi ĝuis danci tiam. Sed tiaj malfruaj noktoj vere fuŝis mian produktivan rutinon konstruitan lastatempe. Li petis 2 noktojn kaj finfine restis 4 - jen mia sola plendo pri li, ke li emis supozi ke, ĉar ni kongruis sufiĉe bone li ne bezonis peni trovi sekvan sofon ĉe iu alia gastiganto.

Alia estis doktorkandidato pri sociologio kiu esploras la historion de Esperanto en mez- kaj orient-Eŭropo dum la komunismaj tempoj. Ŝi vizitis diversajn urbojn por intervjui Esperantistojn kiuj aktivis en tiu periodo. Ĉe ni ŝi gastis 1 nokton (kvazaŭ 2, ĉar ŝia trajno foriris tre malfrunokte la duan nokton), kaj mi gvidis ŝin al kelkaj lokaj Esperantistoj, inkluzive unu kiu afable rakontis pri multaj interesaj eventoj tiutempe, ekzemple pri la fifamaj problemoj kun pagitaj agentoj kiuj aliĝis grupoj por spioni kaj raporti al la registaro. (Li ankaŭ afable pruntdonis al mi utilan sed malnovan libron, kiun mi devas legi por la poznanaj studoj sed ne povis trovi nek por aĉeti nek por legi rete). Aparte impresis min, ke ŝi eklernis Esperanton antaŭ nur monato, sed jam bone komprenas multan parolon - mi oftege tute ne bezonis traduki el Esperanto por ŝi dum la intervjuoj. Ŝi malpli memfide parolas, tamen ege pli bone ol kutima komencanto post nur unu monato!

Ambaŭ gastoj pensas simile kiel ni pri kulturo, politiko, ktp, kaj estis tre agrable pasigi tempon kaj babili kun ili.

Hieraŭ okazis "nokto de teatro" en la urbo, kiam multaj teatroj prezentis spektaklojn malpli koste ol kutime. Ni iris unue al pupteatraĵo pri Marlene Dietrich, kiu estis teĥnike mirinde. Unu aktorino el Toruno rolis asistanto al MD kaj samtempe manipulis homgrandan pupon kiu estis MD mem. Ŝi parolis ambaŭ voĉojn, tre distingeblajn, kaj la korpaj movoj estis mirinde konvinkaj kaj plaĉaj, kaj okazis multaj surprizaj magiaj efektoj, tiel ke la MD-pupo vere ŝajnis vivi. Tiaj teatraĵoj vere plaĉas al mi. Krome ŝi prezentis ĝin angle (plus kantado en diversaj lingvoj), do mi bone komprenis sen la kutimaj lingvoj bariloj, kiujn mi spertas en polaj teatraĵoj.

Due ni iris al Smycz, ekde longe kuranta en loka teatro. Koincide ankaŭ temis pri nur unu aktoro, kaj li impresegis min per energio, kanta talento, korpa talento en iom surreala tragikomedio verŝajne pri amo, perdo, despero, ktp. Li rolis multajn personojn kun spritaj kostumŝanĝoj ktp. Krome ludis viva muzikbando tre bone. La parolado estis pola, kaj mi preskaŭ nenion komprenis ĉar la lingva nivelo estis sufiĉe malfacila, sed bonŝance estis lumaj supertekstoj en la angla - mi ne scias ĉu kutime aŭ ĉu nur pro la samtempe festivalo, kiu allogis multajn eksterlandanojn al la urbo. Certe estis ege pli multaj nepoloj en la spektantaro ol kutime.

We had a busy week, with 2 couchsurfing guests by chance at the same time and also a couple of plays.

The first guest was a mellow friendly guy who came for a theater festival. He's traveled a lot in his life, including to India like us, so we enjoyed conversations about travel, countries, culture, lifestyles, etc. He and I also went to some late night pub with a concert by a local duet playing a sort of fusion of local folk music with some middle eastern influence, I think, which I enjoyed dancing to. Such late nights really wreaked havoc with my recent better-disciplined routine, alas. My only real problem with the visit was that it stretched out from the request/expected 2 nights to 4 nights, since he was feeling so comfortable with us that he seemed to slack off a bit on searching his next host.

The second guest was a grad student doing sociological research about the history of Esperanto in central and eastern Europe during the communist governments. She visited various cities to interview older Esperantists who were active in those times. She couchsurfed with us and I guided her to some local Esperantists, including one who was quite active and was kind enough to spend a long afternoon with us telling many interesting stories about the old days, e.g. the infamous problems of paid agents who infiltrated groups to spy and report to the government. (He also nicely loaned me a book I need for the Poznań studies but couldn't find to buy or read online.) I was particularly impressed that she understood spoken Esperanto so well that I very often didn't need to translate at all for her, despite her only starting to learn it a month ago! Faster progress than a typical beginner.

Both the guests were on the same sort of wavelength as us culturally, politically, etc and it was good hanging out chatting with them about life, the universe, and everything.

Last night was a "night of theater" with reduced ticket prices and many shows in the city. We went first to a puppet theater show about Marlene Dietrich which was technically astonishing. A one-woman show, the actress (from Toruń) played both MD's assistant and also MD herself, who was a lifesize puppet the actress manipulated. She played both voices, quite distinctively and well, and did all kinds of brilliant movement effects and techniques, so that the MD puppet truly seemed alive as they danced, fought, etc. A true "magic of theater" experience of the sort I love. It was also in English (plus songs sung in various languages) so I understood fine, unlike my usual experiences in Polish theater.

The second show we then went to was Smycz, a long-running play by a local theater here. Coincidentally it was also a one-man show, and a real tour de force by an actor with high energy, singing talent, and the acting ability to play many different roles in sequence. It was in Polish and the language level was sufficiently sophisticated that I understood practically nothing, but lucky for me there were some projected English supertitles that helped (despite being riddled with spelling and grammar errors). I don't know if they usually show it with the supertitles, or only for the festival happening at the same time - there were indeed far more foreigners than usual in the audience.

Anna emis provi krei suŝion hejme hieraŭ, do tion ni faris, kaj kiel unua provo ĝi funkciis tre bone! Pluvas lastatempe, do hodiaū ni purigis hejme, inkluzive fenestrojn, kiuj aspektas multe pli belaj nun. La suno revenis posttagmeze, do ni promenis al la urboplaco, kaj tie hazarde renkontis Beata kaj Ania (kiun mi konetas). Ni iris al ekstera kafejo, babilis, tiam promenis al kelkaj insuloj kaj la katedralo, kie hazarde estas "bajkobuso" ("fabelbuso") de Teatr Lalek (teatro de pupoj) kiu prezentis senpagan pupspektalon, bona ŝanco! Lastatempe mi legas kelkajn Esperantajn librojn, inkluzive romanon "Viktimoj" de Baghy, kiu plaĉas al mi. Temas pri militkaptitoj de la unua mondmilito en Siberio, baze de liaj propraj vivspertoj. Kaj mi legas libron pri persona evoluo de Steve Pavlina, kiu ankaŭ plaĉas kaj jam ŝajnas utila kaj inspira. Dume mi gajnis nian monatan hejman tabulludan turniron; la ĉi-monata temo estis ludtitoloj laŭ alfabeta ordo. Listo de luditaj ludoj sube:

Anna felt like trying to make sushi at home yesterday, so we did, and as a first attempt it worked quite well! It's rainy lately, so today we housecleaned, including windows, which look much better now. The sun finally came out, so walked to the town square, where we happened to meet Beata and Ania (whom I slightly know). We went to a cafe with outdoor seating, chatted, then went for a walk to several islands and the cathedral, where there happened to be a "bajkobus" ("fablebus") of Teatr Lalek (puppet theater) which presented a free puppet show, a stroke of luck! Lately I'm reading several Esperanto books, including Baghy's novel "Viktimoj" (Victims), which I'm enjoying. It's about POWs during the first world war in Siberia, based on his own life experiences. And I'm reading a book about personal development by Steve Pavlina, which I'm also enjoying and already seems to be useful and inspiring. Meanwhile I won our monthly home boardgame tournament; the theme this month was titles in alphabetical order. List of games played above.

My old cow-orker Tony from Austin (who now lives in Oslo) visited Wrocław on business, so we got to hang out Wednesday evening for coffee and today, taking a walk to Ostrów Tumski and the botanical garden (despite the rain). It was great to chat with him again, like old times. He and Anna and I enjoyed the long conversation about life, the universe, and everything. It was weird to realize he's only the 2nd person from my old US life to visit us in Wrocław. A disadvantage of moving far away!

Mia malnova labora kolego Tony de Aŭstino (kiu nun loĝas en Oslo) vizitis Vroclavon pro laboro, do ni povis kafumi kune merkrede vespere kaj hodiaŭ, piedirante al Ostrów Tumski kaj la botanika ĝardeno (spite pluvon). Estis bonege babili kun li denove, kiel malnovaj tempoj. Li kaj Anna kaj mi ĝuis longan konversaciadon pri vivo, la universo, kaj ĉio. Estis strange konstati ke li estas nur la 2a homo de mia malnova usona vivo kiu vizitis nin en Vroclavo. Jen malavantaĝo translokiĝi for!

Mi veturis denove al Pionek, la ĉiutriamonata tabulluda kunveno, kaj tre ĝuis ĝin kiel kutime. Resume mi gajnis turniron de Neuroshima Hex, estis 2a en turniro de "logikaj ludoj", kaj ludis multajn diversajn aliajn ludojn, malnovajn kaj novajn. Havis kelkaj sufiĉe bonajn polajn konversaciojn (la pola ankoraŭ malfacilas por mi, ve). Resume, bona longa laciga semajnfino. Bedaŭrinde Anna ne povis ĉeesti pro propra vojaĝo al Varsovio.

Byłem na Pionku znowu i jak zwykle, to bardzo dobry długi weekend i jestem zmęczony ale zadowolony. Wygrałem w turnieju Neuroshima i byłem drugi w turnieju gier logicznych. Grałem w dużo innych gier. Jak często, ja i Petr (Czech Games Edition) chyba byliśmy jedyni, którzy nie są Polakami. Rozmawiałem po angielsku i często po polsku (polski jest nawet trudniejszy jak jestem zmęczony!) Niestety nie było Anny bo ona musiała pracować w Warszawie.

I went to Pionek (boardgame con in Gliwice) this past weekend, and had a good time as always. Unfortunately Anna couldn't go due to a trip to Warsaw.

At the last minute, I was asked to run the "logical games" tournament, with the right to participate in it, so I agreed. We ended up with 16 people, so it worked nicely to have pools of 4 playing round robin, with the 2 best players advancing to the next round. In the 3rd round, we ended up with 2 players (Beata and me) tied for first with 2 wins in our pool, and 2 players (Karolina and Krasnal) tied for 3rd with 1 win; the head-to-head results thus worked nicely as tiebreaker. I'd won all my games except Quads with Beata - a game she beat me in during an earlier logical games tournament too! Unfortunately not a lot of the possible games got played as too many people only knew Blokus Duo or Pylos or a couple others. Perhaps I should have used the system where you can't repeat games to force more variety, but the ultimate purpose of the tournament is just to have fun and people seemed to want to play games they knew this time.

I played a new game Livingstone which has a very clever and interesting dice selection mechanism. You roll twice as many dice as the number of players (e.g. 10 dice when we played with 5), and then in turn select a die to use for an action. Generally high numbers are better. But on your next selection, you must pick a die with a higher number than your previous die, so you don't necessarily rush to grab the 6 first, because then you're guaranteed only one action, when you typically would get 2 actions. It made for fun reading ahead what others would do. But this central mechanism was surrounded by a lot of chrome, including some very random drawing of stones from a bag, which ended up making it feel like an odd not really cohesive mixture of a game to me.

I was happy to get a chance to play some "old classics" like Through the Desert and "recent classics" Metropolys (and I managed to explain the complete rules of Metropolys in Polish) - sometimes many people are obsessed with the cult of the new.

In the pub Saturday night I was invited to a table for 6-player games of Saboteur and Bluff, 2 fun games I enjoy a lot. Petr from Czech Games Edition and I are typically the only non-Poles at Pionek, and we traditionally both sleep overnight in the office of Portal. There was an amusing moment of panic in the pub where we realized we didn't know anyone else who was going there, and we didn't have the key, and our usual contacts for it were not there. Luckily Multidej was unexpectedly going to sleep at Portal and had the key.

Petr showed us a new prototype version of a game he'd shown us at a previous Pionek. The previous version was too slow and complex and random for me. But I was impressed that the new version was indeed streamlined and I liked it more. Still rather random, but it moves much faster and didn't take long, so that's OK.

Multidej showed us an upcoming Polish edition of the Cheap Ass game Light Speed, about which I'd read, and it was quite fun! Usually I don't like real time games, and I don't like games with continuous/analog measurement, and Light Speed (or Kosmiczna Eskadra as the Polish edition will be called) has both as its central idea. In real time we put our spaceship cards on the table. The cards have beam weapon lines drawn from the ship to the edge of the card. As soon as one person has played all their cards, the real-time phase is finished, and now we resolve the cards in numerical order (each player has cards from 1 to 10), tracing their shot lines to see if they hit other ships. Very fast short game, and clever fun.

Sunday morning I started with a game of Powerboats, which I'd played once before at the previous Pionek. I want to like this game more than I do, it seems. It has a clever system, but it's too random/chaotic, in that a single die pip difference can have huge catastrophic consequences. I would be interested to try it with a purely deterministic version, where you get to choose your dice numbers.

Draco has been telling for months that we must play Pędzące żółwie (Reiner Knizia's racing turtle game for kids). I have no idea why he was so into this challenge match, but I think it's actually quite a nice game and I was happy to play with him! There were 4 of us, and in the first one he moved a stack of 3 turtles to the finish line, but his was on top. He seemed to think we were playing with some house rule that the top turtle on the stack wins, not the bottom, but we all mocked him mercilessly as Samur won, I was second, and Draco was 3rd in that stack. The second game I won.

Samur showed me an odd little 2-player game Xe Queo which has a huge element of bluffing which I sucked at. I wanted to like it more than I did. It's a short game, so I should try it again.

Goor ran the Neuroshima Hex tournament, a true Pionek tradition, and there were 22 of us. It's always run as single elimination. ("brutally efficient!") Last time Anna and I got paired in the 2nd round, and I was knocked out. This time I made it all the way to the final and won the tournament, woot!

I got to play Space Alert finally, one of the hot new cooperative games that's also real-time. Since I'm not into coop games nor real-time, I'm not really the target audience, but I was curious about the game, and certainly happy to take the opportunity to play with Petr the publisher demoing it to us. The core system is indeed very clever - you're playing action cards into a program of 12 steps, while discussing it with the other players, while a 10-minute sound file plays telling you about events (like an enemy space ship appears ahead of you in the 5th round) and people program their crew member to go fire a gun in response or whatever. Then when the 10 minutes are up, we actually play through our programs, resolving the game effects. Of course during the real-time planning, sometimes you make mistakes (e.g. we forgot that a certain gun doesn't shoot at long range, so we didn't kill an alien ship we thought we would, and it inflicted lots of damage and ultimate blew up our ship). Tense adrenalin followed by geeky program resolution. It's not a game I'll want to own or play often, but I can see playing it again sometime.

Had various nice conversations with various people, including a Master of Orion 2 and 1830 fan who was interested in my experience on those development projects - man, that was so many years ago! But it is always nice to hear from people who enjoyed those computer games I worked on. Also some successful nontrivial Polish conversations, which are still mentally taxing for me, especially in a long crazy sleep-deprived gaming weekend.

I was tempted to get my own copy of Hannibal or Conflict of Heroes, which I've been playing a lot lately with Piotr, but rationality and minimalism kept me in check since we can keep playing at his home with his copies. But if there'd been Friedrich for sale, I'd have bought it. I'm starting to be sufficiently confident that I could get 4 people together to play that unusual cool sounding game.

WC invited me to a nice final game of Marrakech, and then I came home.

Ĵus okazis la ĉiujara festivalo de markantoj ("szanty"). Ĉefe temas pri polaj bandoj, kaj kvankam la markantoj similas al kelta muziko ŝatata de mi, la stiloj ne samas, kaj la tekstoj plejparte polas, do la sperto ne vere kongruas kun mia nostalgio al kelta muziko. Mi iris nur al la fina vespero (dimanĉe) por aŭdi irlandan bandon "The Dubliners". Ili estas longegatempa bando, fondita en 1962! Ili ĉefe ludis kordinstrumentoj: violonon, 2 gitarojn, 2 banĝojn, sed la violonisto ankaŭ kelkfoje bele ludis keltan fluton. Kelkaj kantis, kun tre diversaj voĉoj. Ni ĝuis ilin, kaj imponis kiom maljunaj tamen viglaj kaj talentaj ili estas. Estis unu kanto, kiun ofte ludis Clandestine (kelta bando tre ŝatata de mi en Teksaso). Impresis ankaŭ, ke kelkaj bandanoj lernis kiel diri kelkajn frazojn en la pola, kio ravis kaj aplaŭdegigis la aŭskultantaron! Kutime vizitantaj eksterlandaj muzikistoj diras nur "dobry wieczór" (bonan vesperon) aŭ "dziękuję" (dankon) pole dum koncerto, do estis kortuŝa surprizo, ke kelkfoje ili diris polajn frazojn, eĉ longan frazon kiel "Estas nia unua fojo en Polujo, sed ni esperas, ke ne estos la lasta."

The annual "szanty" (sea shanty) festival just happened. It's mostly Polish bands, and although the music is similar to Celtic music, which I love, the styles are not the same, and the words are mostly Polish, so the experience doesn't really address my nostalgia for Celtic music. I only went to the last evening (Sunday) to hear the Irish band The Dubliners. They are quite a longtime band, founded in 1962! They mostly played cord instruments: violin, 2 guitars, 2 banjos, but the fiddler also played the Irish whistle beautifully. Several of them sang, with quite diverse voices. We enjoyed them, and it was impressive how old yet energetic and talented they are. There was one song which Clandestine (the Texas Celtic band I really liked) used to play. It was also impressive, that several band members learned how to say some stuff in Polish, which really got the audience cheering and clapping. Usually visiting foreign musicians only say "dobry wieczór" (good evening) aŭ "dziękuję" (thank you) in Polish during a concert, so it was a touching surprise, that several times they said polish stuff, even long sentences like "It's our first time in Poland, but we hope that it won't be the last."

Właśnie byliśmy na corocznym koncercie "Szanty festiwal". Tęsknię za muzyką celtycką. Dla mnie ta muzyka jest podobna do muzyki irlandzkiej ale ne dość podobna. Więc ja byłem tylko w niedzielę wieczorem, żeby słuchać koncertu "The Dubliners" z Irlandii. Ten zespół jest stary, od roku 1962 (!), ale oni grają dobrze i koncert podobał nam się. Była piosenka, którą często grał mój ulubiony zespół "Clandestine" w Teksasie - to dobrze! Były skrzypce, 2 gitary, 2 banjo plus czasami irlandzki flet. Oni nawet trochę nauczyli się po polsku, więcej niż zwykle (muzycy z innych krajów zwykle mówią tylko "dobry wieczór" albo "dziękuję"), jeden nawet mówił coś o tym, że "to nasz pierwszy raz w Polsce ale mamy nadzieję, że to nie będzie ostatni" (mnie więcej). Fajnie! :)

A breakdown in communication has meant at least 50 Polish people have been logged on the [Irish] crime database under the name "Driving Licence".

The Polish term for driving licence, "Prawo Jazdy", has been taken down in error by members of the traffic corps as the actual identity of the motorists they stopped.

Mi pasigis semajnon en Poznano (parto de interlingvistikaj studoj), tiam ekskursis en Toruno (plaĉa urbo - tie loĝis Koperniko kaj Grabowski - kie mi kaj unu samklasano tranoktis ĉe afablaj lokaj Esperantistoj). Estas muzeo kun Esperanta aŭdvida prezento pri la urba historio. Nuntempe mi legas multon Esperante, inkluzive la romanon "Pro kio?", supozeble la unua originala detektiva romano en Esperanto - 1920. La libro estas nek bonega literaturo nek lerta detektiva romano, tamen tre amuzis kaj interesis min laŭ vidpunkto de historio (kaj pri Eŭropo ĝenerale kaj pri Esperanta literaturo specife), kulturaj moroj kaj sintenoj pri virinoj ktp, kriminalaj procedoj tiutempe (la priskribita krimo estus ridinde neebla hodiaŭ dank' al moderna teĥnologio), ĉiutaga vivo tiutempe, ktp. Multe de la romano rakontis pri komunikaj problemoj, kiuj tute ne ekzistas hodiaŭ dank' al retpoŝto, poŝtelefonoj, ktp. Ankaŭ amuzis ke aŭtomobiloj estis fojfoje malpli rapidaj ol trajnoj kaj eĉ kurantaj homoj. Estas multaj legendaĵoj ĉi-semestre. Pli teĥnikaj faklibroj (pri lingvoscienco ktp) ankaŭ interesas min, sed aparte plaĉas al mi legi la fruperiodan literaturon, ĉar mi sentis la mankon de literatura legado. I spent a week in Poznan (part of the interlinguistics studies), then we took a day trip to Torun (a nice city - Copernicus lived there, and Grabowski (important chemist and Esperanto poet!) - where I and another student in the program spent the night with friendly local Esperantists). There's a museum with an Esperanto audio-visual presentation about the city history. Lately I'm reading a lot in Esperanto, including the novel "Pro kio?" (For what?), supposedly the first original detective novel in Esperanto - 1920. The book is not great literature nor a clever detective novel, but I found it enjoyable and interesting from the standpoint of history (of Europe in general and of Esperanto literature specifically), cultural customs and attitudes about women etc, criminal investigation procedures at that time (the described crime would be ridiculously impossible today thanks to modern technology), everyday life then, etc. Much of the novel talks about communication problems, which are completely non-issues today thanks to email, cell phones, etc. It was also fun that cars were sometimes slower than trains and even running humans. There is a lot to read this semester. I'm enjoying various more technical books (linguistics etc), but I particularly enjoy reading the early literature, since I missed reading fiction. I'm quite immersed in Esperanto lately and blowing off my Polish learning, unfortunately, but at least we spent a fun evening with a Polish boardgaming couple who only speak Polish, so at least I got some Polish practice, plus we learned the game "Im Jahr des Drachen", which was pleasing. Anna gave me the game "Inside" for my birthday, and we've been enjoying it a lot. It's snowing lately, but not terribly cold. Some poor pigeon just flew hard against the window with a loud smack.

Bedaŭrindege, ke tiom multaj tiparoj ne havas Unikodajn literojn, do la ebloj por Esperantaj bildstrioj malmultas. Tiu tiparo Comic Sans MS ne ege plaĉas al mi. Ĉu iu scias pri aliaj komiksaj tiparoj, kiuj efektive subtenas normon Latin Extended-A, ekzemple?

(Does anyone know any other comic fonts besides Comic Sans MS which actually have Unicode letters, at least Latin Extended-A? It's a shame that most fonts don't have any Unicode.)

O granda LJ-menso, ĉu iu el vi registradas librojn, kiujn vi posedas kaj, se vi legis, kun personaj notoj/komentoj? Ĉu vi rekomendas iun programon aŭ retpaĝaron (kiel boardgamegeek.com por tabulludoj) por fari tion, aŭ simple uzas ordinaran programon por tekstodosieroj aŭ kalkultabeloj, aŭ iun alian sistemon? Mi volas ekfari ĉi tion.

O great LJ mind, do any of you keep track of books you own and, if you've read them, with personal notes/comments? Do you recommend some program or website (like boardgamegeek.com for boardgames) to do this, or you simply use an ordinary text file or spreadsheet program, or some other system? (If there's a good website for tracking such stuff, it needs to handle Unicode.)

A long time ago we bought one of those home home pull-up bars that you fit into a doorway, and it stays up by the magic of outward pressure and friction. I was always paranoid it might fall down while I was doing pull-ups. While I was raised up high. With my calves lifted horizontally behind me. With a hardwood floor under my knees. Now I can confirm that this is possible, and it hurts like hell, especially when all the weight lands on just one knee. The resulting screaming cursing was to be expected, but the intermittent cold shivers in my spine were an unexpected side effect. Well, happy Zamenhof Day, anyway...!

Antaŭ longa tempo ni aĉetis tian horizontalan ekzercostangon, kia afiŝiĝas en pordejo kaj restas magie pro ambaŭdirekta frota premo kontraŭ la flankoj de la pordejo. Mi ĉiam timis, ke ĝi eble falus dum mi ekzercus min. Dum mi tenus min alte. Kun miaj gamboj levitaj horizontale malantaŭ mi. Kun malmolega planko sub miaj genuoj. Nun mi povas konfirmi, ke tio eblas, kaj diable doloregas, precipe kiam la tuta pezo premegas nur unu genuon. La rezulta kriada sakrado estis komprenebla, sed la fojfojaj malvarmaj tremoj en mia spino estis surpriza flankefiko. Nu feliĉan Zamenhofan tagon, ĉiuokaze...!
